Manager uses ChatGPT to write employee's performance review, sparking debate on the importance and ethics of having AI handle certain aspects of our work: 'It didn't even understand my role'

  • "My manager used ChatGPT to write my performance review and it didn't even understand my role."

First off, I want to clarify that I am not an Al hater by any means. I work in tech, so I definitely think there's a time and place for it. If people want to use it to refine their writing and sound more professional, then that's totally fine, but that's not what took place here. For more context, I have worked in the Customer Education team at this company for over 4 years and have always received high performance ratings with a yearly raise, and have even been promoted before. Last May, they a

  • So, I received my performance review today, and it was quite obvious that she used Al to generate it because it sounded like it was written about 2 different employees and contradicted itself at every turn.
  • Examples: • It went into detail about "improving my video editing skills" and content creation, which are not part of my role. whatsoever. I'm guessing Al thought that a customer education role meant that I create recorded content for our website, which I do not. • It used the little "-" dash thing for almost every paragraph, which is a trademark of ChatGPT
  • . • Extremely contradictory feedback about how I am a "pillar of consistency," yet I was given the lowest rating, "Inconsistent". It also said I am a "master collaborator" and a "model for generously sharing technical expertise across the ecosystem," but then said that I'm not seen as "reliable" or "present" in how I show up for my team. Lastly, it had extremely generic feedback that looked like they were just copied and pasted from somewhere rather than giving specific, detailed examples.
  • Even if I'm wrong that it was Al- generated, this review was still conflicting as h I and extremely unhelpful. This rating has now blocked. me from a raise and promotion for the next year, based on our company policy, so I'm pretty disturbed by it. It is not at all in line with the feedback she gave me throughout our meetings.

  • MostBoringStan I'd ask her for clarification on all the hypocritical parts. Do it over email, so it's in writing. And then go over her head with the results showing her failure as a manager.
  • boywithflippers Fellow IT guy here...the way our industry is embracing Al is absolute trash, and this is an example of that fact. Smart people understand Al is a tool, not a solution. Other people (i.e. management or people who don't actually work for a living) see it as a cure-all that will do all the things all of your useless employees do but better and with NO mistakes ever. I've stopped using Al entirely because it never does anything correctly.
  • All that to say, you manager is a lazy moron. If it's Al, f that lady for not taking the time to actually writing a review. If it's not Al, are they drink? I'd just flat out ask them if it was Al because you'd hope they knew your job better than that. Remember that a manager's job is to remove road blocks for you so you can do your job...servant leadership. They can take a bit of criticism when they screw up, just make it productive and professional.
  • El_Cartografo In your response, bullet point by bullet point, spell out exactly how this review does not correspond to your actual job descrбand duties performed. Give itemized, concrete examples of how you've improved and exceeded the metrics. Quote your job description in rebutting critiques that fall outside your scope. Make it a full page, bulleted response. Send a copy to HR and your division head.
  • PutridMeasurement522 Ask her to point to ONE concrete example of you doing the stuff the Al claimed. If she can't, cool, now you've got "manager can't evaluate my role" in writing. Also: request the raw notes she used. Watch the vibes change real fast.
  • mrhandbook Some of my staff used it to write their reviews. Super obvious. Oddly my worst performers used it too.
  • _Chaos_Star_ Ask the occasional question about the most inconsistent part of the feedback, then nod your head as if it were sage advice every time. In the meantime do a mediocre job until you find a better one or better opportunity within the org. You're going nowhere with this manager.
  • Away-Quote-408 Well it's happening everywhere I guess. We have performance review chats, so this doesn't apply to my work in that sense. BUT, they're using chatgpt to write organizational goals AND are not discouraging people (in group meetings) from using it to write personal goals. Basically you have to devise your goals based on company goals and people use chatgpt, which imo is absolutely trash. And unlike you OP, I AM an Al hater. Unfortunately I have to use it and prove I use it, but I app
